In this article we will look at what is pond waterproofing, what materials are used to perform it, what benefits different types of materials provide and how to measure your pond to properly select the right size of the film.
What is pond waterproofing and what is it for?
Pond waterproofing is the process of creating a barrier between the water and the ground to prevent water from seeping into the ground and to keep the water level in the pond. Without waterproofing, water can quickly disappear from the pond, leading to problems with the ecosystem and the health of the animals in it.
Types of waterproofing materials:
1. PVC film is the most common material for waterproofing ponds. It is highly durable and UV resistant. It is easy to install and has a long service life of about 20 years.
2. butyl rubber sheeting is another popular material for pond waterproofing. It is very flexible and easy to install. It also has high UV resistance and durability. It has a lifespan of about 50 years.
3. Geotextile is a material that is used as an additional material for waterproofing and creating a barrier between the ground and water. It prevents water seepage and protects the waterproofing material from mechanical damage, tearing roots of trees and various plants. We recommend the use of geotextile together with any of the above mentioned materials for waterproofing the pond.
4. Bowls are the most expensive material to waterproof your pond. Bowls are easy to install and do not require any special ground preparation. It provides maximum reliability and long life.
How to measure the volume of the pond and choose the right size of the film
Before you start waterproofing your pond, you need to measure it correctly. This will help determine the right size of waterproofing material and avoid problems with water leaks.
The first thing to do to accurately determine the size of the required piece of film - is to measure the maximum length and width with a flexible tape measure, while the tape measure blade must lie on the base repeating the contours of the pit.
Further, to the obtained parameters it is necessary to add one meter to the shoreline (0.5 meter on each side). An additional linear meter is needed to create a protective edge and secure the film on the shore.
Algorithm of action:
1. Measure the length, width and depth of the pond.
2. Use the following formulas to find the right size of film for your pond:
Length of the foil: length of the pond (L1) + 2 x depth(H) (at the deepest point of the excavation) + 1 m (0.5 m per shoreline);
Film width: pond width (L2) + 2 x depth (H) (in the deepest place of the excavation) + 1 m (0.5 m per shoreline).
