Choosing a filter installation option - gravity or pump?
When installing the filter above the water level in the pond, it will have to be pumped into the filter using a pump suitable for its performance, and after filtration, the water will be drained from the filter directly into the pond. This installation option is called pumping. If it is possible to choose an installation option, preference is always given to the gravitational option.
In the gravitational version of the installation, water is supplied to the filter by gravity. And the pump is used to supply the filtered water from your filter back to the reservoir. This option is preferable since a pump of lower power is used and the load on it is less, which can significantly save electricity and the resource of the pump itself. With the gravitational installation method, when the pump fails, water will remain in the filter, and if other pond equipment fails, there is no danger that the pump will download all the water from the reservoir. Also, with this installation method, the appearance of the reservoir is significantly improved since there is no pump and hoses, and getting access to the pump, which pumps water out of the filter, is much easier and simpler for maintenance.
All Red Label multi-chamber filter models are made of high quality polypropylene. Inlets and outlets with a diameter of 110 mm contribute to optimal water flow and make the filter compatible with almost all pond pumps. When choosing a pump, you must consider the volume of the reservoir and the maximum performance of your multi-chamber filter. To ensure proper maintenance, each filter chamber is equipped with a dirt drain hole with a 50 mm ball valve.
The first filter chamber is a mechanical filtration chamber.
Filter brushes are installed in the first filter chamber; they are mounted in such a way that the entire chamber space is filled up with brushes as much as possible. Thus in the first filter chamber a volume is created tightly filled with filter elements on which large particles of debris and dirt are retained. Filter brushes must be periodically cleaned of dirt, the frequency of cleaning depends on the contamination of the brushes. They can be washed directly in the filter chamber using water from the pond. Large debris such as leaves, twigs and filamentous algae are preferably removed from the brushes by hand, and fine dirt can be drained through the drain hole.
The second filter chamber is a biological filtration chamber.
After cleaning from large particles, water enters the second chamber of the filter. In the second chamber there is a floating bio-media. Water from the first chamber is supplied to the second through perforated pipes so that the bioburden is NOT washed out of the filtration chamber. It is important to use high-quality floating bio-media so that its surface area is very large. Filter bacteria that decompose harmful substances live and multiply on the surface of the bio-load, and the larger the area, the more bacteria can live on it. The layer of bacteria is brown, occurs on the surfaces of the filter elements and is called a biomembrane. Using a biomembrane, ammonia is converted to nitrites, and nitrites to nitrates. Therefore, it is very important that the biomembrane remains “alive” and that the working and floating bio-media should not be cleaned. Nevertheless, if necessary, you can drain the water from the chamber through the drainage hole, and you should immediately fill the chamber with water from the pond, rather than spraying it through a garden hose or other sprayers. If water is supplied under pressure through spray guns, the biomembrane will not survive. For ideal bio-media operation, it must continuously move, in order to ensure bio-media movement, AquaKing Air Stone Tube air compressors and atomizers are used.
The third filter chamber is a biological filtration chamber.
In filters with 4 filtration chambers, chamber 3 is completely identical to chamber 2, both in filling and in functionality.
The last filtration chamber is a biological filtration chamber.
The last filtration chamber in all models of multi-chamber filters is a biological filtration chamber and it is filled with original RED-X mats. Mat RED-X is also a bio-load on which the biomembrane grows, contributes to the nitrogen cycle of the reservoir. Biological media in the form of mats is stationary and the biomembrane on them will be different in structure in contrast to biomembrane on a floating bio-media. These biomembrane of different structure complement each other, ensuring optimal processing of harmful substances. The mother should also be washed with water from the pond so as not to destroy the existing biomembrane.
